Trust, what?

We are living in an age where reciprocity is a pungent pejorative.  Where the unapprised are swindled out of their hard-earned capital by peddlers who know their products are not 100% and perpetuate it with integrated planned obsolescence. Sometimes the planned obsolescence fails before its time and your sneakers begin to unravel or your tires explode on the freeway at 70mph.  Today, this is called a repeat customer.

There are still a minority out there that treat their customers with magnitude of decorousness, and stand behind what they advertise.  But, for the most part, the attitude is “So, I sold you a bad product, what do you want, your money back, fat chance.”

One of the biggest swindles that is going around today is “its free” and then in fine print “if you buy this reoccurring service forever”

I witnessed a six year old kid playing kid games on his computer, he got a pop up with a funny face on it, clicked it and now his family’s phone bill is $52.00 per month more.  He sign up for a phone service that gives him the ability to make collect calls and AT&T handles the billing.  When his father saw the phone bill, he moaned and groaned about it, then paid it.  Well this went on for 3 months to the point where he wanted to change his phone service because the bills had doubled.

You would think AT&T would not have anything to do with deceptive marketing and that most people view their bills with the scrutiny of an I.R.S. agent.  Wrong on both accounts.  AT&T gets paid for the billing and 11 out of 1000 pay their bills without scrutiny.  It’s a bean count.

The outcome was he cancelled AT&T service and went with another company that was not unscrupulous in their marketing.

1.       Choose your companies wisely.

a.        Are they ethical?

b.       Do they stand behind their products?

c.        Do you have to pay to clean up their mistakes?

1."all calls will be answered in the order in which they were received, your current wait time is 2 hours"

2.       The phone has been around for over a half century and is now an integral part of our society.

a.        Can I make a 911 call?

b.       Does it work when the power is out?

c.        Is the signal strong, with no drop outs?

d.       Do I need another phone company so my phone will work?

3.       The Internet has been  main streamed since 1993 and is now a viable source of communication.

a.        You are paying for speed and reliability – test your connection at noon and then again at 6pm (when usage is the heaviest)

b.       Is the free stuff worth it?  Or will my bill triple 3 or 6 or 12 months down the road?

c.        Computers break- how good is tech support?  Do they tell you to fix your internet connection over the internet that does not work?

d.       Beware of out-sourced help –they are cheap labor and sometimes they don’t get paid. (back to being ethical)

4.       Gasoline

a.        (Don’t get me started)

Face to Face is usually the best method for getting things fixed.  Things that come with a warranty as opposed to things you have to buy a warranty for are better.  Shop local because it is going to break!
